If you are looking for an experienced English teacher and tutor specializing in multi-sensory teaching methodology, you have just found her!
I have been teaching Language Arts including Reading, Writing and Study Skills beginning in 1983. In addition, I have been a college English and Remedial English Professor for over 10 years. I hold a Bachelors of Science from Syracuse University in Syracuse, NY. My Masters Degree from the College of New Rochelle in New Rochelle, NY is in Language Disorders and Learning Disabilities. This degree in Language Disorders has allowed me the opportunity to teach self-contained Communication Handicapped classes and third grade in the Elementary Schools. These students' language arts skills ranged from K-5.
I have also taught remedial English students ranging academically from middle school through college level English 101. My certification is in both Regular and Special Education and I have received a certificate in Instructional Theory from Northern Valley Schools in Mahwah, NJ. I am a member of the International Reading Association (I.R.A) and the Council for Learning Disabilities.
Multi-Sensory Teaching Philosophy Techniques & Methodologies
Multi-sensory tutoring is using as many of your child's senses simultaneously while learning; such as, visual, auditory and tactile senses. The more senses used, the bigger impact it has on the brain and memory. During our lessons, I integrate as many hands-on art projects as needed. Students often don't realize they are learning to read and write because lessons are fun and creative. Diverse resources are available for your children or for your young adults to use during tutoring sessions. Regardless of age, an array of materials can be used to accommodate your child's special needs and can be changed to meet your child's learning styles. My teaching background allows me to work with kindergarten through college age students. I have worked with children, (including my own son who was diagnosed with ADHD at age 4), who have all types of learning disabilities (such as autism, deafness, LD, ADD, ADHD, stroke & brain injuries and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder). Tutoring sessions are not only geared towards students with Learning Disabilities; in fact, many of my students simply need assistance with their Language Arts. All children can and will learn when they are provided with a multi-sensory learning environment. Once strategies have been taught, in time, children need to OWN what they have learned and have the confidence to apply it independently. This shows that they feel good about themselves as learners and with this increased self-esteem; they are capable of doing anything!
Preventing Academic Failure (PAF), 1-2-3 Magic, Kurzweil & Qualitative Reading Inventory (QRI)
I have trained and effectively used Preventing Academic Failure (PAF) A Multi-sensory Curriculum for Teaching Reading, Writing and Spelling in the Elementary Classroom, by Phyllis Bertin and Eileen Perlman.
Gold Star Tutoring has many books and CDs written by Dr. Thomas Phelan, PhD on 1-2-3 Magic on Effective Discipline for Children 2-12. His positive reinforcement methodology is one that I incorporate into the tutoring sessions.
The Kurzweil Educational Systems' research-aligned technologies that I utilize provide complete reading, writing, and study solutions to help all students overcome learning challenges and succeed academically.
The Qualitative Reading Inventory (QRI) emphasizes authentic assessment of children's reading abilities, from the most emergent readers to advanced readers with expanded coverage of critical areas of assessment and improvement.
Assessment
"Catch Them Being Good!" Is another fun resource available to use with your child as well as "A Positive Behavior Game" by Child's Work, Child's Play. Dibels Administration and Scoring & Benchmark Assessments are two assessment techniques that we also utilize for your child's benefit.
After the tutoring sessions, I am happy to give parents an informal assessment of the lesson. By observing your child write, read and listen, I can assess him/her informally. Current writing samples from class are a good way for me to assess your child's most recent work. I will be able to see both strengths and weaknesses. OBSERVATION along with my background in informal assessment is one of the best methods of assessments. In addition, I always have an on-going portfolio of your child's work and progress. At the parents' request, I can assess your child with commonly used reading and writing assessments as well as conferencing with your child's teachers.
